From the Principal

Greetings from Whitesides. This year we have approximately 650 precious children in grades Child Development through grade 5. Our dedicated professional staff is highly qualified and includes seven National Board Certified teachers. Our parents provide exceptional support for our school through the PTA, by volunteering in classrooms, by tutoring students, by attending parent conferences, and by supporting home-school relations. This dynamic partnership enables Whitesides to provide a warm and nurturing environment for children to learn and "Reach For The Stars." When 2011 state PASS results were released in 2011, Whitesides earned an "EXCELLENT" Absolute rating and "Excellent" Improvement rating.

We are truly blessed by significant community support. Our PTA organized a Closing The Gap Bash and auction as well as Mamie's Market Place to support Spanish and computer classes as well as fund field trips. During the year, Whitesides holds many activities for children. Our chorus hosts two concerts, we celebrate Grandparents Day, Veterans Day, No TV Week, math and game night, Children's Book Week, American Education Week, Grandparents Day, and Grade level book theme dress up day. Students publish a newspaper, support recycling, and our student government promotes community service and food drives. Wellness initiatives include the Charleston Marathon, tennis, and nature trail walks. Students shine in our annual Variety Show.

Looking for some academic practice and review? Please check out some of the resource links provided at the top of the page. You will find under math, exercises that will help you and your child practice math facts. You can also do drill and practice from the other math resource sites or experiment with the wonderful science resources available to you as well. Have a great time exploring these resources with your child. Students in grades who use Study Island and Renzulli in school, can also access this program from home.

Parents are invited to chat with the principal during informal lunch gatherings once a month. These "Lunch with Lona" sessions are scheduled the first Monday of the month and will be held at 1 PM. Buy a school lunch or bring your own as well as any ideas you want to discuss.
